01 · The Challenge

Kestrel Mining Co. operates an open-pit site reached by a single access road with weight-restricted bridge crossings and a narrow permitted travel window at the nearest township. Their drilling and crushing equipment routinely exceeds standard flatbed dimensions, and every piece has to arrive on a specific day to avoid idling a production line that costs far more per hour than any transport premium. Kestrel's previous transport arrangement had no dedicated oversized-load capability — each move was outsourced ad hoc to whichever operator could source the right trailer, which meant permit applications started late and route conditions were often unverified until the convoy was already en route.

A missed or delayed delivery on this account isn't an inconvenience; it stops a crew and a production line that can't run without the equipment.

02 · Our Approach

Northstar's specialized transport division took over end-to-end planning for every move: permit applications, route surveys, and escort vehicle coordination, rather than treating each shipment as a one-off booking. Every move now starts with a physical route survey — checking bridge weight ratings, overhead clearances and turning radii — before a single permit application is filed, so problems surface on paper instead of on the road.

03 · Implementation

For each of the fourteen moves to date, a route survey team walked the access road in advance, flagging any seasonal changes (washouts, temporary structures, new power lines) since the last move. Permit applications were filed against a standard lead-time buffer, and moves were scheduled at night where local regulations and road conditions allowed, reducing exposure to other traffic on the single-lane sections. A lead and trail escort vehicle ran GPS-tracked convoy positioning that Kestrel's site team could follow directly, so the crew knew exactly when to be ready to receive and offload.

04 · Results

All fourteen equipment moves to date have arrived on their scheduled production window, with zero missed deliveries. Average permit lead time has come down from what was previously an unpredictable multi-week process to a consistent six days, because route conditions are verified up front instead of causing late-stage permit amendments. Kestrel has since brought all specialized and oversized transport under the same Northstar contract rather than sourcing it move by move.
