Sable Pharma Distribution: Holding Cold Chain Integrity Across Five Regions
Client: Sable Pharma Distribution
A pharmaceutical distributor replaced paper temperature logs with digital, exception-alerted cold chain tracking across a five-region delivery footprint.
Fictional demo client and figures, built to illustrate how Northstar approaches a logistics problem.
01 · The Challenge
Sable Pharma Distribution moves temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals — including refrigerated vaccines and insulin stock — to pharmacies and clinics across five regions. Their previous logistics arrangement used paper temperature logs filled in by drivers at each stop, which meant a temperature excursion in transit often wasn't discovered until the log was reviewed back at the depot, sometimes a full day after delivery. That created both a patient-safety risk and a compliance burden: regulatory audits required Sable to reconstruct temperature history from handwritten sheets, a process that could take a full week per audit cycle.
02 · Our Approach
Northstar proposed moving Sable onto its temperature-controlled fleet with digital logging built into every trip, rather than layering monitoring on top of a generic dry-freight service. Every vehicle on the account carries calibrated sensors reporting continuously, with automatic alerts to dispatch the moment a reading moves outside the validated range for that product category — not after the fact.
03 · Implementation
The retrofit covered Sable's full lane list across all five regions, with drivers certified on cold chain handling procedures before taking any pharma load. Packaging protocols were validated jointly with Sable's quality team for each product category, since insulin and vaccine stock have different tolerance windows. Digital logs are timestamped and geotagged at every stop, replacing the paper sheets entirely, and are exportable directly into Sable's compliance reporting rather than needing to be manually transcribed.
04 · Results
Since the retrofit, the account has recorded zero temperature excursions across all five regions. Sable's compliance team reports audit preparation time down roughly 70%, since temperature history is pulled from the digital log rather than reconstructed from paper. On-time delivery on the account sits at 99.1%, reflecting the tighter scheduling discipline that cold chain handling requires.
